Mission: To raise quality Hereford cattle that produce excellent results for commercial and seedstock producers.
ABOUT US:
Double J Farm LLC was founded by me in February 1998 after I had
yearned for my whole life to have a Hereford farm / ranch. I was
inspired by my grandfather who was a commercial Hereford breeder
in Texas. I went to Texas Tech University and received a degree in
Animal Husbandry. After graduation I was commissioned a 2nd
Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry. I served with the 82nd
Airborne Division, 1st Cavalry Division in the Republic of South
Vietnam and the 3rd Infantry Division in West Germany. I separated
from service in 1973 and it took nearly 25 years to obtain my
cattle farm.
When evaluating how we accomplish the mission of Double J Farm LLC
we have established a method to choose which animals are in the
herd. First the pedigree is reviewed and then the epd’s. Cattle
that remain under consideration are then chosen based on their
phenotype, structure, disposition and performance. All cows are
matched with bulls using the AHA mating predictor. All cows are
required to calve every year and the calving season is about 60
days. The bulls are evaluated the same way and the calves born are
expected to need no assistance and start growing in a hurry.
Double J Farm LLC is proud to be a Gold TPR Breeder multiple times
with the last being Fall 2021. In addition, we are trying to
improve the breed and we have 3 dams of distinction on the farm
and several in the past. The farm has also had 3 CHB sires of
distinction and one bull was used in the young sire program.
Along with breeding quality cattle an effort is made to conserve
the environment and improve the land. The North Carolina Cattle
Association in 2006 awarded us with the NC Carolina Environmental
Stewardship Award. It has been a pleasure throughout the years to
host various groups for workshops from NC State and the extension
service. The highlight was when Double J Farm LLC hosted the NCHA
Field Day in August 2017 with over 100 in attendance from 7
states.
Off the farm there has been an effort to support the NC Hereford
Association serving the board for a number of years and being
president for two years. The NC Annual Sale was dedicated to me in
2015 which was a great honor. I have also represented the NCHA to
the AHA National conference several times.
Now that you know more about our dreams, methods and our love for
Hereford cattle it is time to tell you about our cattle.
Below is a table for our cows and bulls used to produce the 2021
calf crop. The criteria is 14 EPDs of the AHA as reported on the
Sire/Dam. PAN American Cattle Evaluation dated 4-4-2022. The
results are based on the cow herd or bulls as of Dec 2021.
